PC Games purchased for £3500

Completed the purchase of PCGames.co.uk yesterday for £3500. No small amount but overall I am very happy with the deal and the purchase, it was done through sedo as the seller for some reason wouldn’t talk directly, still if they want to pay 10% to sedo fair enough. It obviously sits well with PC’s. Gaming is massive, I had looked at videogames as a domain but quite rightly the seller of that wanted £50k - there was a possibility of talking about a joint venture or lease to buy but it was always going to be a very expensive domain that I didn’t own outright.

PC games is a much smaller market than videogames but with that the price comes down a lot as well and as I said it ties in with PCs beautifully. Why pc games? Well for me I view the gaming industry as one (from a consumer level) that won’t suffer as much through the recession and will fare well in the coming months and years. I don’t know the numbers but while Woolworths & MFI go into administration I am pretty sure that Call of Duty 5 still broke records and sold very very well. It’s not that people don’t buy music, games and household goods, it’s just that they don’t go to Woolies anymore to do it.

Games are outselling music for the first time and with broadband uptake at around 60% it offers for the first time a solution to pc piracy that had long since plagued developers, anyone with a machine that’s good enough to play the latest games will have an internet connection and that means the copy of the game could be validated against a central server cutting out the ease of piracy that has hampered the pc gaming industry. Gaming will always be bigger on consoles but the pc market is a big enough to make this a great investment if I can execute it’s development properly, which I’ll get round to as soon as I can complete COD World at War 😉

  2. I agree, definitely a solid buy. The good thing with PC games is they won’t suffer the same problem as CDs have, everyone will carry on buying PC games from the shops, unlike CDs where many people just downloads for free.

  3. Congratulations Scott. Good domain name, and you are right about the recession not affecting gaming.

I wonder home many people in this demograph are not going out as much, prefering to stay in playing games?

Pc games is a smaller market, but then less competition. Plus, PC Gamers are already online, rather than playing via their TV?

Very nice purchase - best of luck.

  4. Nice domain purchase. At that price, you must be very confident that you can turn a profit 😉

  5. Very nice purchase. You should be able to break even with that within a year.

  6. Congratluations Scott, another good buy. You definitely seem to be able to find value in the market. Whenever I enquire about a slightly above average (rather than a good or even great domain) domain I seem to get asked for £20k by default.

  7. Very nice domain and as you say the gaming industry is a growing one which is still performing very well considering the so called recession in the UK.

I run a niche video games related site which is performing very well and has been for the past 6 months or so. I’m sure it won’t take too long to recoup the initial £3.5k investment.

  8. Man, you’re on a tear. You seem to have picked up quite a few good domains recently. Business must be good.

    Congrats. And Happy Thanksgiving 🙂

  9. less and less people will play pc’s games.

And more and more pc games will be avaialable for free.

video games 50k is much better valued than pc games at 3.5k

  10. Honestly, that does seem like a sizable investment. But based on the success and experience you have now, I imagine it will pay for itself very quickly.

  11. Nice buy Scott!

Were you deliberately looking to build a stable of sites around PCs, or was it just a lucky find?

    Cheers, Jon

  13. Great buy Scott! I noticed you have a single page on there at the mo. Is your intention to build a full site on the domain? Also, I know you often prefer to avoid adsense for the first 6 months of a site, while you are link building, do you think the same applies to amazon links? Done correctly, I think amazon ads can become part of the content, so its maybe less important? Cheers!

    • Thanks Richard, yes I’ll develop this early next year, it gets some traffic so Amazon will do as something on there for now until it gets more of my attention.

  14. Scott, what type of strategy do you have in mind for cross linking your PC sites? You have at least 4 solid domains in the PC/laptop sector.
Is there a “best practice” way of cross linking to increase SEO? Or will you stick to no-follow links?
I have this conundrum with a lot of Geo based sites I have now.
It is obvious for me to link them to one another as the content is related but I am worried about Google penalties.
What would you or anyone else suggest??

    • I see no problem linking between sites you own especially if they are in the same sector, it’s relevant and not in any way spammy so I will happily link between them where relevant Andy.

  15. Andy, you can also go for the A -> B -> C -> A linking ring. I know a lot of people use that successfully.
