Importance of networking in person

I’m off to another blogger event this Friday. It’s being thrown by LG (launching a new phone) at the Mayfair in London and looks pretty swish. It will give me the chance to network a bit with other bloggers and also pick up another free phone. The reason I’m posting about it now is they’ve had a few cancellations, so if you’re a tech blogger and can be in London this Friday evening get in touch and I’ll sort you an invite out.

There are various benefits to networking in person, including:

  • It’s much easier to trust and form a bond with somebody when you see them face to face, rather than the some what anonymity of the online world
  • Due to the first point people turned to open up more and be much more revealing about what they do
  • People actually like being asked about their business and what they do
  • A physical beer is infinitely tastier than a virtual one (and can lead to more revealing conversations)
  • Anybody can read about news online, if you find out in person it’s much easier to break a story first and get all the benefits that entails
  • Being able to call somebody is lot more effective than email
  • Easier to make referral contacts
  • Travel expenses are a business expense (before tax) and you could always combine the trip with a jolly
  • It’s fun

In a follow up post I’ll be sharing various ways on how to find different networking events to help improve your business, if you’d like to contribute ideas leave them via a comment and full credit will be given.

Tell LG I have a domain with their name on it Al, I always felt LG made the best TVs ;)

Enjoy the jaunt, you must be collective airmiles aplenty!

Hi Al,

I’ll be in London on Friday. I am a PPC blogger from Romania, targeting USA & Europe.

Thanks a lot for all the great posts.

Best,

Razvan

Hi Razvan, how long are you in town for? Probably can’t get you a press passdue to blog relevancy but if you fancy meeting up for a beer/chat I can certainly do that (I’m already meeting somebody else from Romania on the Saturday).

You might want to add - it’s less likely that you’ll be scammed by someone you haven’t only dealt with over the net (speaking from experience). Looking forward to what LG comes up with!

Drinks in Mayfair. Boy that takes me back a bit. Used to know a nice little pub in Shepherd Market.

Razvan and Mubin, I’ve passed your details onto my contact at LG, hopefully he’ll be in touch shortly and I’ll see you there.

It was great meeting you at the event Al, got to meet loads of UK fashion and tech bloggers who LG had kindly invited.

Have to say the phone was well worth it as it cost me more than £300+ ($600) to travel and stay London for two people but the phones blo*dy sexy too, my Nokia N73 going out of the window :)

Hi there Al,

Just wanted to say that it was great meeting you at the LG event - thanks for the Tytn II feedback!

I’ve been reading some of your older blog posts here and have found it very inspiring to read, so thanks very much for that - it has even prompted me to re-invest in my site by taking on my first free-lance writer!

Cheers!
Simon

Hi Zath, it was great meeting you too, shame time ran out. Cool to hear you’re taking on other writers. for me it was one of the best decisions I ever made to expand.

Keep in touch and take care

Al
