Friday Link and News

poker.gifThis is not public news yet but I’ve heard on the grapevine that a well known online entrepreneur suffered a server failure and has lost his entire site worth mid $xxx, xxx so please take this as a warning and backup, NOW!

This one could be interesting:

Yahoo and Google, the world’s two biggest search engines, have announced a two-week experiment that will see them share advertising space.

Via the BBC.

Webmaster Talk is merging with Earners Forum, I met Lee Dodd the owner of Earners at Elite Retreat and he was a really cool and helpful guy, thanks for all the advice Lee [via]

Whilst on holiday I enjoyed reading the 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris, he spoke about a fair few things I already do (and have written about here before) but he also touched on virtual assistants, something I’ve not looked at before and as if by magic there was a cool post about somebodies experience with VA’s over on eMoms (soon to be something else) this week .

Todays game is Random Defence, it’s not as good as DTD IMO but a fun game none the less.

I read the 4 hour workweek a little over a month ago and has actually hired someone at Brickwork as a test. They seem really professional but their pricing is far higher than I had expected from an Indian company.

Nice book by the way and he does have some valid points (even though I don’t agree with him all the way).

I’m with you there Mikael, I like a lot of what Tim writes about but some of it I certainly wouldn’t want to do, being a kick boxing world champion is cool but winning by pushing your opponents out of the ring isn’t exactly ethical :)

Yeah I thought you were more of the latin dancing type :)

I wouldn’t call it unethical. I’d call it clever. It’s not like they couldn’t have done the exact same thing to him. Plus, once he did it once, they should have been on to him. It seems to me that if you can fight someone, you should also be able to figure out how to keep him from pushing you out of the boundaries.

Unethical was probably the wrong word, unsportamsnly is a better way of putting it. You’re absolutely right though his opponents should of learnt to deal with it.

I would say that this is one of the most eventful Friday posts you’ve made!

And yeah, I recently switched SEO hosts to a provider that I know does realtime backups. It’s essential.

Thanks Justin, it’s been something of an eventful week and I’ve only been at home for 2 days :)

Server failures suck. Hopefully he (Tyler?) has a good backup.

As far as I’ve heard there is no backup so this server failure really really sucks.

Hopefully he can restore the site or at least find some kind of backup. It’s a very good reminder to keep things safe.

The impression I’ve been given is there is no backup at all and with the sort of site it is it would be impossible to recreate from a Google cache. Hopefully he’ll at least find some forgotten backup.

For those interested in a backup tool look at Site-Vault. I’m using it for some time and I sleep better at night :)

Al,

Good post. I just wanted to add a little value to the post as well.

I wrote a post a while ago regarding a client who asked me to put a backup procedure in place.

Here is the story behind it and the software used.

I hope this helps out a little.

I’m glad someone finally mentioned what happened to Tyler. I’ve been wondering. I’ve definitely had catastrophic server failures and I hate to say but I still don’t have super redundant backups; better than I used to but not perfect by any means. It’s gotta be really awful for poker-forums.

I assume this is Tyler Cruz we’re talking about. He doesn’t miss a trick does he. Just visited his website and he’s turned the server failure into an opportunity to make money by asking for donations :) . Go get em Tyler
