I don't open with $100 unless the domain is worth about $1000. If it was say, a $10,000 domain then I'd probably open around $3,000 and negotiate from there. Of course, sometimes you get idiot domain sellers. I bid $200 on a domain which is genuinely worth only about $800. The seller made a counter-offer of $1,000,000 and wouldn't go lower than that. He said that he'd rather keep it than sell it for less than that. That was a waste of his time and mine. Most of my domains are for development so the purchase price will make up a small amount of the overall value.
