Recycle User Data for a new site

RecycleNice little bit of recycling done recently that allowed me to create a new website.

I do translations and often get phrases that make me sit and think for a second when completing them, many I have heard before but I get some new one’s popping up which are quite cool.

I also get a steady supply of new one’s I have never heard off.

Phrases like

  • Being different isn’t the same as making a difference
  • When a child is born so is a mother
  • You cant use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.

I know there are lots of word or the day sites & famous quotes but I still felt I could put this data to good uses and create a Phrase of the day website, checking the domain I found phraseoftheday.co.uk was available (13th March) which was nice and I already had the phrases so a free template and a free quote script and about 50 minutes later I had a new website.

A couple of links and one stumble later and it’s doing just over 100 visitors per day

Phrase of the day

Around 6% of the traffic is direct type in traffic as well which is nice for a brand new UK domain, the traffic is a good mix of from my own network, Google, direct, other sites and Stumbleupon. Again with a new site like this I like to leave it for the first 6 months with no advertising or Adsense so that other webmasters are not put off linking to it.

  1. It might be nice to allow folks to subscribe to this (email/rss) so they can get a new quote each day.

  2. I am constantly amazed Scott. How DO you do that? 120 uniques a day within a split second….

    • The domain was getting up to 20 direct visitors per day Mikael - I presume no past history so just typing it into their browser. So that along with residual stumble traffic and a few forums and some immediately from Google for the term ‘phrase of the day’ all helped.

      • But still I’m impressed. It might be that I’m setting up the wrong niche sites but I’ve never experienced anything like that. Ever.

  3. Nice registration! Maybe you’ll also be interested in registering phrasesoftheday.co.uk (available)?

  4. That’s pretty remarkable for a site to take off so quickly, especially when there are already plenty of sites like it. Well done.

  5. I am quite new to Internet side of things …I too was thinking of making a site like greatday.com for fun and daily motivation :) (for example greatday.com/motivate/images/keepgoing.html)
    Got a few unrelated questions…
1.What is the best registrar for .co.uk domains ?
2.I know you have mentioned about buying templates from templatemonster, would you still advice this ?
Hope you don’t mind answering these unrelated questions.

    • For UK domains I would use a UK registrar so someone like ukreg.com - for templates yes I still use templatemonster.com - they have a great selection, don’t mind the Q’s at all that is why the blog is here.

  6. You had quite an idea. I like it, both funny and interesting. Congrats :)
