I think you get more clicks if you are the top commentator on a specific post rather than for the week on the sidebar.
I think if it had a money making anchor text it may have got a better CTR, but I think the main reason for being on the Chow top commentators would be for the free link juice.
It still impresses me when I hear of the amounts some domains go for, but then I look at my domain collection and think… oh… ah well… seemed like a good idea at the time. I still think I have a few worth sitting on, or building mini sites, but we shall see.

Was a $60 Pool Backorder. Yeah got caught up with ‘domain fever’ after that, then sold nothing for 6 months, quit buying, then they all started selling, so had no inventory. Lesson Learned “Slow And Steady Diligent Domaining” is the best approach. And always go into it it like a casino, with a budget to loose.
One thing that I now keep in mind is also the value of a website (not just a domain name) after it has been earning some money.
A site can be sold for the 24 month value (maybe even more) and even if it’s earning only $1000 per month, you have a backup plan in case you really need cash for $24,000.
only $1000 a month…. I’d be happy with only $100 a month at the moment with my sites!
