That’s a wrap! - Friday 14th September

Chris did an experiment to see how much traffic he would receive from John Chow if he became a top commentor, he got a whopping 14 visitors, I reckon he’ll get a lot more by publishing the case study :)

Great analogy over on Dosh Dosh about Link Bait and the mullet, yes I did say mullet.

Fly.co.uk sells for £87500, Ink.co.uk goes for £130k and Recycle.co.uk which includes a website but mainly sold on the domain value sold for £154,000 over the last week or so making it a good time for UK domain sales.

Google announced yesterday that they will be sponsoring the Google Lunar X Prize, one of the largest sponsorhips to date with $30 milllion in the pot.

To win $20 million, a private company somewhere in the world will have to execute a successful robotic lunar mission within the next 5 years (the next government mission is planned for somewhere within the next 6-8 years), rove around a certain distance, and transmit video back to earth.

A further $10 million is set aside for a second place company ($5 million) and other ‘bonus’ prizes ($5 million). Found via Blogging Stocks

75 year old from Sweden has one of the worlds fastest internet connections, source The Local.

A 75 year old woman from Karlstad in central Sweden has been thrust into the IT history books - with the world’s fastest internet connection.

Sigbritt Löthberg’s home has been supplied with a blistering 40 Gigabits per second connection, many thousands of times faster than the average residential link and the first time ever that a home user has experienced such a high speed.

As we missed the addictive game last week we have a whole page worth today, be warned they may not be conducive to making money.

I think you get more clicks if you are the top commentator on a specific post rather than for the week on the sidebar.

I think if it had a money making anchor text it may have got a better CTR, but I think the main reason for being on the Chow top commentators would be for the free link juice.

It still impresses me when I hear of the amounts some domains go for, but then I look at my domain collection and think… oh… ah well… seemed like a good idea at the time. I still think I have a few worth sitting on, or building mini sites, but we shall see.

Wow, 9.5k on your first sale. You must have had the biggest grin on your face. Was it just for a domain or an established site too?

That sounds like a great sale Humphrey, did you buy it at reg fee? and did you then go on to buy hundreds more expecting the same magic to happen as I really have to hold myself back at times ;)

Was a $60 Pool Backorder. Yeah got caught up with ‘domain fever’ after that, then sold nothing for 6 months, quit buying, then they all started selling, so had no inventory. Lesson Learned “Slow And Steady Diligent Domaining” is the best approach. And always go into it it like a casino, with a budget to loose.

One thing that I now keep in mind is also the value of a website (not just a domain name) after it has been earning some money.

A site can be sold for the 24 month value (maybe even more) and even if it’s earning only $1000 per month, you have a backup plan in case you really need cash for $24,000. ;)

only $1000 a month…. I’d be happy with only $100 a month at the moment with my sites! :)
