$1 million online competition and more!…..

Well its been 4 months since this blog was created back in March, how are we doing? This would be a good time to ask if there are certain things you would like to see more of or less of, you can let us know.

That’s a wrap!.. Friday

  • The golden jigsaw is an online treasure hunt of a sort, 1000 pieces of a jigsaw will be scattered across the internet and users can download a playing board to add the pieces they find to. Winner gets $1,000,000. Looks like they still have lots of pieces to sell but could it be the next viral thing if it takes off? I don’t know but it starts today.
  • Facebook overtakes MySpace in the UK for internet searches according to Hitwise.
  • There are still some free (UK) domains you can claim if you wanted one for a mini site from Paul.
  • Continuing the free idea Patrick posted that we can all expect a free boost in our Alexa traffic due a release of the toolbar for Firefox.
  • Google released their second quarter results

The summary: Revenue up 58%, profits down from the previous quarter. Jordan comments over at Marketing Pilgrim, do we expect too much from Google?

Added: Just added seeing as we were putting the boot into .info domains the other day that Travel.info just sold for $116,000 making it the largest info sale to date.

  1. Not sure about this Alexa rank change. If everyone gets a boost then surely we will all stay in the same positions. Maybe specific niches might increase and some might lower… but I dont expect to see much change.

    • I would expect tech site and webmaster sites to get a boost, Joe Bloggs in the street probably won’t download it but I’d expect even as a short term novelty that a quite few webmasters will even just to test and therefore the sites they visit would get a boost.

  2. It’ll be interesting to see how the jigsaw goes. I think the million dollar thing has had it’s day myself, too many clones about…. although I did get a square on the milliondollarhomepage way back when.

    • I’d agree, this one is being a bit more inventive so we’ll see, rest assured if it is successful in any way we can expect a LOT of jigsaw clone websites popping up Garry!

  3. Alexa isn’t that reliable. And I managed to boost the rank of a domain easily using a simple script and a proxy on a port on my computer. So its not that reliable.

Regarding the free domain I went and asked for one. Thanks a lot.

I am not really that sure about facebook overtaking myspace, atleast for my age group because it has a lot of compition against it from bebo (very very popular with school kids) and myspace which is school kids and teens mainly

    Anyway thank a lot

    • Facebook is growing at a massive rate. They recently announced over 30 million active users!

I’ve never been a fan of myspace, most sites seem to look tacky and apart from the odd band site, have never found anything useful on it. But I’m an old git (well, 31) so maybe I’m just not in the right age group to appreciate it :)

I do like facebook though. Is there a self made minds group on it yet? hehe

  4. Facebook is far superior to MySpace. MySpace is so clunky and slow.

  5. Lol, contest starts now but they still have LOTS of pieces to sell. Not a good idea, I guess.

  6. I mean, it was a great idea on how they came up with it. But a bad idea for having started the contest earlier.

  7. $116k for Travel, is a pretty decent price for the purchaser if (as i’m sure they do!) have the funds to develop it correctly.

Makes you wonder about the price some premium .info’s might be available for at the moment given their tarnished reputation….

  8. Talking about domain-selling, I am looking to sell a couple of my domain and site soon. I believe I am running out of time to maintain my sites, and this is kind of a waste, if I believe others could actually do it better than I am. Well, on seeing $116k for a travel.info domain, I am doubting if I can fetch something half of that!
