I'm leaning towards having a couple of 'main' sites with several non-maintenance mini-sites.

Lately i've barely had the time to do anything with my online ventures due to other work and personal commitments.

Certainly several of my sites have been consigned to non-maintenance mode.

Very true, I've got a bunch of smaller sites and have found a couple that have performed much better than expected, so I'm currently working on a much bigger site based off of one of these niche sites.

I too have tried to run multiple sites only to have it go down in a blaze of fire.

One thing that I have found multi-sites to be good for is determining what niches are more profitable and which I have an interest in maintaining. Sometimes it is good to start several sites and then dump the losers instead of hanging onto them because that's all you have.

I have seen some as well Martin, nothing really tasty that's tempted me but always open to new purchases, I have a few tattoo sites covering the basics and I started one with Al that's more social networking. The good thing about having one large site is you can then launch small sites boosting traffic to quickly see if they sink or swim :)

I have noticed a number of tattoo related sites for sale over at SitePoint recently, and I thought of you! Are you going to be picking any of them up?

I earn almost all of my online revenue from my main site - I don't think there is anything wrong with this so long as your income streams are diversified and you are not relying on one traffic source.

I noticed that the main difference between a large site and a mini-site is that the last one doesn't need to be updated to begin with.

From what I have seen as well that if traffic does drop on your main "big" site, then it does come back afterwards. Sometimes nothing is needed and you just carry on updating daily as usual. I found once that I had some duplicate content and had to filter out some stuff with robots which also recovered from a traffic drop.

I think as long as you have a quality site then you will be ok generally. A few road bumps happen but all smooths out again.
